Health and Fitness  Background by Marie Jacques Burrick:

Hello Everyone,

My name is Marie Jacques Burrick. I’m living in Gent (Belgium). My hobby is powerlifting in the Masters Class (45-49 years of age) in the weight class of 67.5 kg.  It has been only a few years since I began practicing this hobby.

At the beginning of 1999, my son and his friend wanted to do something positive with their physiques. After a while they chose powerlifting in order to get into better shape.  As a good mother, I was interested in what he was doing. So we got in contact with the people in the powerlifting world. It didn’t take long to get integrated into this very friendly community.
Wim Elyn, one of the most famous powerlifters, told me that my body structure was suitable to become a powerlifter.

First I started training just for fun, but soon it became more serious. Wim designed special training schedules so that my results improved more and more. In the year 2002, my son started working and due to new timetables at work, it was impossible for him to continue.
But I went on and before I knew it we were in a training session for my first European Championship.

Powerlifting became so important in my life, that from that day on, I did everything (within my possibilities) to get my name on the record lists. With success!! See www.powerlifting-mjb.be
It was (and still is) a hard way to go.  I am training 4 times a week (Mon., Wed, Fri, Sun) each time between 3 and 4 hours.  The number of reps I am getting to (in one week) is between 400 and 450. In one week I am lifting about 38.000 kg to 44000 kg. And I am still progressing!  Don’t forget that all these training sessions must be combined with my normal job (I am a cook in an institution for disabled people), the care for my mother and of course my household.  So I have no time to waste!

One word of advice for every starting powerlifter: if you want to reach for the top ….. train, train and …..train. Listen to the people who have been involved in powerlifting for many years and try not to make the mistakes they made.  There is no other way.

Marie Jacques Burrick
