Health and Fitness Background by David Griffin:

I started lifting a few light weights in the garage at home when I was around 12, only very light for high reps. When I was 16 I had my first experience in a proper gym. It was fantastic and I was completely addicted from the first moment I walked threw the door.

At first I was only interested in bodybuilding style training, trying to make myself look as good as possible. But as a lot of the other guys in the gym were my friends and the same age as me, it started to become who was the strongest rather then who looked the best. At this stage in my training I had never even heard of a deadlift or a squat, and didn't have any interest in training the lower part of my body. All that mattered was who could bench the most, shoulder press the most and use the heaviest weight doing bicep curls. It wasn't till I was 21 till one of my friends introduced me to a weightlifter called David Fitzhenry that I discovered what powerlifting was. We started to train with each other once every few weeks, him showing me the ropes and telling me about training programs. techniques etc.
Then in September 2002 he said he was holding a bench press competition in town for the Irish Drug Free Powerlifting Association and asked would I be interested in competing. I said yeah and we started training bench nights with each other once and twice a week every week until the comp. on the day I weighed in at 109.9kg to be in the under 110kg junior class. I benched 145kg raw that day. It was a fantastic experience and helped me move on to full powerlifting training and competitions today.
