Health and Fitness Background by Dione Wessels:

I got more involved with fitness when I was 21 years old. Although I have always been an athletic person, I had gotten away from fitness, competing, etc. after high school and college. The first gym I worked at was New Lady Fitness in Stone Mountain, GA. I started there as an aerobic instructor. After being there for about 3 months, I started competing with other instructors from the facility in aerobic competitions. At this time, I did not participate in a lot of weight training. Once I moved to St. Louis, MO in 1993, I became more involved in weight training.

After a year of training with weights, I started preparing to compete in bodybuilding. I competed in several bodybuilding competitions as a lightweight weighing 114 pounds. After a couple of years with body building, I became interested in power lifting, and within a year, I started competing in the 132 pound weight class. My first year competing (1998), I won the Women Nationals in my weight class and the overall best lifter. I went on to represent the US in World Power lifting, and set World records in the squat and deadlift for the 132 pound weight class. The records I set at that time were a 371 lb squat and a 370 lb. Deadlift in 2000. In 2002, I broke my squat record with 402 lbs, the deadlift record with 400 lbs. and the total record with 900 lbs.

Currently, I own, operate, and compete in Strongman/Strongwoman contests. My interests include running sprints, stairs, cycling, and of course weight training. I love strongwoman contests because as an athlete, you get to push your body with lifting heavy objects, flipping large tires, carrying odd objects, etc. These events not only test your strength, but your cardio as well. For those that would like to get involved in the sport, please feel free to contact me at dione@nastrongman.com and visit my web page at www.nastrongman.com.
