Reason for Participating in the Study: |
|
"I
enjoy research and studying about different techniques utilized to naturally
increase an individuals athletic performance. I feel it would be interesting
to observe how my body responds to the supplements, and note if it works.
Participating in this study will benefit myself and my practice, because I
will know first hand how a supplement study is performed."

Health
and Fitness Background
by Dustin Winnekens: |
|
My love for weightlifting began at a young age in Eaton, Wisconsin.
Growing up surrounded by farms I would go and play games with the
neighborhood kids. Unlike today’s children we did not have video games;
instead we would see who was the strongest and the fastest. Flipping
tractor tires, carrying stones and bails of hay became my introduction
into strength athletics.
When I was ten years old my parents gave me my
first weight set and subscription to Muscle and Fitness magazine.
Noticing my love and enthusiasm for weightlifting my parents signed me
up with a strength coach in Denmark, Wisconsin. He taught me proper form
when doing exercises and how to push myself. In his gym I was introduced
to clean and jerk, snatch, squat, bench and deadlifting. The Olympic
lifts were not for me, but I really enjoyed the three powerlifting
lifts.
In the Navy I began to lift more for the aesthetic look. I would buy
books and magazines and follow every program in them. I had amazing
results. I graduated high school weighing 170lbs and only three years
later went home at 240lbs. To the amazement of family and friends, which
many had no clue that this big guy was me.
After the Navy I continued with my training while I went to college for
Philosophy. I took a few Sports Physiology and Nutrition classes, but
quickly found that a lot of the information being taught in class was
already changed. I found no value in the classes and often found myself
bringing in research papers on the various subjects and proving the
professors wrong. This lack of knowledge by," Sports Physiologist and
Experts in the field of sports” propelled me towards learning all I
could about various lifting programs, sports nutrition and strength
sports.
While in college I worked at a local high end fitness equipment dealer
in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I was surrounded by fitness and many of the
employees competed in various sports. We had received a flier for a
strongman competition being held in Madison, Wisconsin. I entered it and
fell in love with the competitiveness and strength required to perform
the lifts. I did not fair that well in my first competition, but I still
entered in two more competitions that summer. To my amazement I had done
better at each competition.
The following year I entered the same competition in Madison, Wisconsin
and bettered my previous place by five places. Then while training for
the Minnesota State Strongman Championship my knees started to give me
problems and I had to drop out. While rehabbing my knees I ended up
injuring some tendons in my arm. Being injured forced me to look at my
training and the approach. I was still lifting the same repetition range
of a bodybuilder but extremely heavy weights.
That was when I moved to Sherwood, Wisconsin and started going to a
Chiropractor and Massage Therapist weekly. My injuries were result
vertebral misalignments and trapped nerves. With my injuries healed I
started to look at Louie Simmons and the Westside Barbell training
method for help. What I found was that with the high repetitions being
performed I was loosing my proper posture which caused me to experience
pain and injury.
With all that behind me I look forward to lifting big and training
injury free for a LONG TIME!
